What is a Trans-disciplinary Play Based Assessment?
Based on work of Toni Linder, Transdisciplinary Play-Based Assessment is a way to evaluate a young child in four critical domains: sensorimotor, emotional and social, communication, and cognitive, through observation of the child's play with family members, peers, and professionals.
As part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes the SLP, occupational Therapist(OT), learning disabilities teacher, social worker, and parents, we've successful used this model to initially qualify 3 and 4 year olds to our Pre-School Special Education Program.
While every child's needs are viewed individually, we also needed a way to compare children across time in order to help guide the decision making process. In order to solve this problem, we created decision-making rubrics. Each of the specialists on the team focused on one PBA area. Then, the decision rubrics helped guide placement decisions.
We hope you find these rubrics helpful for your school teams!

After completing a PBA, here are some helpful tools to guide additional analysis:
Evidence Based Practice:
"Meyers, McBride, and Peterson (1996) examined the social validity of play-based assessments and reported that parents and professionals had positive perceptions of the assessment, team meetings, feedback from professionals, and resulting reports. Further, the play-based assessments were completed in a significantly shorter time frame than traditional assessments, and the resulting reports contained more useful information that could be directly translated into intervention." (Crais, 2011)
"When an adaptation of Linder’s play-based assessment was compared with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, Second Edition (Bayley, 1993), the results were highly correlated (Kelly-Vance, Needelman, Troia, &Ryalls, 1999)." (Crais, 2011)
